Bio for Greg Gerritt


Greg Gerritt recently served a term as the chair person of the Green Party of the United States Presidential Campaign Support Committee and a term as chair of the GPUS Coordinated Campaign Committee. An active Green since 1984, Gerritt was the first Green Party candidate for state representative in the US, running in a 3 way race in 1986 and receiving 16% of the vote in the Western Mts of Maine. After the 1990’s redistricting he ran in a reconfigured district and received over 20% of the vote in 1994. His most recent race was for Mayor of Providence Rhode Island in 2002.

Every two year cycle since 1992 he has actively been involved in a campaign, several times being the lead organizer for the Presidential race in Rhode Island, and has helped to lead efforts on two voter initiated referendums. In 2007 he interviewed and helped 24 candidates assess whether they were ready to actually seek the Green Party nomination for President. For those capable of actually pulling together a campaign he provided much of the information and some resources they needed to get started

Before moving to full time political and activist work, Gerritt ran a carpentry business, and built a solar powered homestead. A student of organizational dynamics and ecology, Gerritt has participated in developing community leadership programs, currently manages the coalition of environmental groups in Rhode Island, with responsibilities in the area of fundraising, membership, partnerships, message development and delivery, education, mentoring, and two major awards programs, and runs a public policy consulting practice with a focus on prosperity and compost . Recently he was the convener of the RI Green Jobs Now conference and helped launch the Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island.
